Amazon River also known as Rio Amazonas in Spanish found in South America is the world’s largest River. It’s born in the deep frozen areas of Andes Mountains and has the largest drainage basin in the world accounting for one fifth of the worlds total river flow. It has a total river flow of ten greater largest rivers combined. It’s so large that during the wet season is exceeds more than 190 kilometres in width. This is not due to huge dimensions but because it flows through the tropical rain forest, where there are hardly roads or cities hence no need for water to be diverted to allow areas for bridges.
Amazon basin is the largest in the world and covers around 40% of South America with an approximately 7 million kilometers. During the dry season it covers 110, 000 square kilometers and 350,000 square kilometers during wet season. It drains around 300,000 cubic meters of water per second in the rainy season into the Atlantic Ocean and carries around 20% of the total volume of fresh water entering the ocean.Amazon River is surrounded by a giant tropical forest and river basin stretching to more than five million kilometers and it’s the richest tropical forest in the world. It has over 3,000 species of fish and the numbers are still increasing. Among the most fierce of its species are the notorious piranha; a carnivorous fish which lives in larges pools and may attack humans and livestock. Others are dolphins, the Amazonian Manatee, the bull shark and anacondas.
